I wanted to post one of the early pages from The Unwritten, and this one got me thinking about what we went through on the opening of the series to strike the tone we wanted. Our initial idea was to open the book with three pages of prose from the last Tommy Taylor book but we were worried that would be a little dry for some readers and might scare them off. So the challenge became to create a feel of a book but still have it work as a comic...

I loved this page, and the gentleman in the last panel has been earning himself a greater part in the story because of the way he takes over a page. You’ll be seeing a lot more of him and that hand in future isues!

This issue has a soft spot in my heart. The main story had wrapped up and this was the epilogue for all the female characters in the issue before the final epilogue for Lucifer. Mike writes great female characters and they were all fun to draw. Except for Jill Presto, that is. I just never felt like I really got her, even after 70 issues or so. But Elaine and Spera and Mazikeen–they were great!
