The Deleted Scene from The Girl with All the Gifts
Back when I finished the first draft of The Girl With All the Gifts and was about to submit it to my publisher, Orbit, there was an additional chapter nailed on the end. My wife Lin, who is my beta test reader of first resort, read that draft and pointed out that the final chapter sort of retroactively took away a lot of the punch and impetus of the ending. I re-read the MS and came to the same conclusion, so the novel as submitted ended just as the published version does, with Miss Justineau writing an upper case A and a lower case a on the whiteboard outside Rosie.
But I showed the deleted chapter to my editors and they made it available as an Easter egg through the Facebook page they set up for the book. The idea was that if you liked the page, or shared a post, or whatever, you’d get access to the chapter. Then that promotion ended and the chapter just wasn’t there any more. I’ve been asked about it many times since, so I’m putting it up here for anyone who wants to read it.
Don’t, whatever you do, read it before you read the rest of the book. Or before you see the movie, which is out on September 9th. Starring Glenn Close, Gemma Arteron and Paddy Considine – and introducing Sennia Nanua as Melanie.
